Family: Zingiberaceae (includes gingers, galangals, and turnerics)
Genus: Alpinia (includes Australian native ginger)

Botanical/Binomial Name: Alpinia mutica
Meaning of Name:
Alpinia, after the 17th century Italian botanist Prospero Alpini + Latin -ia (used especially to form genus names by appending to the name of (usually) a scientist or patron); and
nutans, from Latin nūtāns (‘nodding’, ‘drooping’): a reference to the inflorescence (flower spike)

Common Names: Dwarf false cardamom (sometimes written ‘cardamon’), Shellflower

Botanical Characteristics: Herbaceous | Perennial | Rhizomatous | Drought tolerant | Cold tolerant
Propagation: Division of rhizomes

Item Description:
These dwarf false cardamom plants are roughly 300 mm tall and the dimensions of the bottomless pot are 90 mm square × 150 mm deep — I love these pots as the square shape and bottomless design produces beautifully straight and deep roots with no spiralling whatsoever. (I sell these brand-new if interested.)

I reuse and recycle pots whenever possible, and the pots the plants come in may show signs of this, but are otherwise in great condition.

The plant you will receive may not be the one in the photo, but will be very similar. I may remove the pot and/or trim the leaves when posting if that aids packing and getting postage down for you.

Plant Description:
This member of the ginger family is a clumping ornamental with highly fragrant leaves — so fragrant that barely brushing past them releases their intense cardamom-like scent. It is much more tolerant of cold than true cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum). It is not related to true cardamom.

The leaves of false cardamom can be used to flavour food, but the seeds and pods taste horrible.

It grows to just 1-1.5 m, making it a fantastic understorey filler with a lush tropical look.

Growing Information:
False cardamom can be grown in pots as well as the ground, and thrives in organically rich, moist soil in a shady and protected spot.

This species is an evergreen perennial native to the tropical Maluku Islands of Indonesia, but will grow in temperate areas with mild winters. Please note that this species may not flower much, if at all, in temperate areas, but regular applications of fertiliser will still help develop a fast and densely clumping plant with intensely fragrant leaves that are love at first sniff.

Local pick-up is welcome — we’re in Gwynneville, near Wollongong University.
Pick-up is by mutual arrangement please, as we don’t have a shopfront.

Having said that, we are always here and more often than not can easily fit in with whichever day and time suits you best!
Feel free to suggest preferred pick-up time(s) in the comments box during checkout and we’ll reply as soon as we see the notification.

Especial Note Regarding Large Air-Pot® Orders
Depending on the order, we may suggest that large Air-Pot® orders are best sent directly to you from the warehouse.

Especial Note Regarding Jujube Trees
When posting out bare-rooted jujube trees, we routinely trim them to fit the box and keep postage costs to a minimum. These trees are typically knee-high when planted out, though some may be smaller.

This of course doesn’t apply for pick-ups, and in fact we will set aside the tallest trees specifically for this purpose. These trees can often be hip-high, and sometimes taller again.
Please note that this is not a guarantee, as heights of different cultivars can differ from year to year.
