Basket of Ferns with Selaginella kraussiana Companion

This is the exact item as in the photos — a basket of ferns (species unknown), with the spikemoss groundcover Selaginella kraussiana for company!

Potted in sphagnum moss to keep everything moist, and in a 270 mm black saucerless hanging basket to keep that moisture in.

The ferns will fill out the top and the Selaginella will cover the sphagnum moss and cascade over the side as it is already doing in the fifth and seventh photos.

About the Hanging Basket:
Dimensions of the basket are 270 mm diameter by 165 mm without hanger. The removeable hanger is 430 mm long, and basket with hanger combined is about 560 mm tall.

The hanging basket is a 5.7 L saucerless pot, best suited for moisture-loving plants. Strawberries, mints, and Rhipsalis spp. are just three examples which do very well in these baskets. These baskets also help moisture-lovers power through the strong winds which dry other plants and pots out.

Water is retained at the bottom of the pot below the level of the island visible in the last photo. This reduces watering requirements by reducing drying out whilst also retaining a reservoir for roots to tap into. Excess water above the reservoir simply drains out the hole.

I use these outside, where I hang them from tree branches where watering isn’t a problem but where the built-in water reservoir helps moisture-lovers get through really hot days and/or really bad winds. But if using indoors, water around the edge only so as to trap water around the island. Overwatering will cause water to fall out the hole of course, as will overwatering any indoor pot also cause spillage!
