Eucalyptus is from Greek: eu, well + calyptos, covered. A reference to the well-covered cap covering the developing flowers
erythrocorys is from Greek: erythros, red + korys, helmet. A reference to the bright red bud cap covering the flowers

Eucalyptus erythrocorys, or the red-capped gum, grows anywhere from 3 m to 10 m tall. It is known for its bright red rectangular cap (called an operculum) on the flower bud, which falls to the ground as the bright yellow flowers emerge. These flowers are up to 7 cm across and appear from late summer to early autumn. The flowers are followed by large helmet shaped fruits, and so many are produced that the tree is weighed down.
