Botanical Information:
Family: Fabaceae
Genus: Castanospermum
Species: australe
Meaning of name:
Castanospermum is from Latin: castanea, chestnut; and Greek: sperma, seed. A reference to the chestnut-like seed
australe is from Latin: australe, southern. A reference to its southern hemisphere location
Castanospermum australe is the only species in the genus Castanospermum. Its native habitat is the coastal rainforests and beaches along the coast from northern New South Wales around Lismore, up to the Cape York Peninsula at the tip of Queensland. It also extends inland some 160 km west to the Bunya Mountains in southern Queensland.
Common names are the Black Bean and the Moreton Bay Chestnut. The tree can reach 40 m at maturity and develop a dense, rounded canopy with a spread of 4 m to 8 m. It is an ideal shade tree in parks and gardens and its extensive root system helps stabilise river banks from erosion.
The 4 cm long red and yellow flowers appear in mid to late spring, followd by large pods up to 20 cm long by about 5 cm wide. Each pod contains 3 to 5 large bean like seeds weighing around 30 g each.
Local pick-up is welcome — we’re in Gwynneville, near Wollongong University.
Pick-up is by mutual arrangement please, as we don’t have a shopfront.
Having said that, we are always here and more often than not can easily fit in with whichever day and time suits you best!
Feel free to suggest preferred pick-up time(s) in the comments box during checkout and we’ll reply as soon as we see the notification.
Especial Note Regarding Large Air-Pot® Orders
Depending on the order, we may suggest that large Air-Pot® orders are best sent directly to you from the warehouse.
Especial Note Regarding Jujube Trees
When posting out bare-rooted jujube trees, we routinely trim them to fit the box and keep postage costs to a minimum. These trees are typically knee-high when planted out, though some may be smaller.
This of course doesn’t apply for pick-ups, and in fact we will set aside the tallest trees specifically for this purpose. These trees can often be hip-high, and sometimes taller again.
Please note that this is not a guarantee, as heights of different cultivars can differ from year to year.
