Dwarf Tomato Varieties

Dwarf Tomato Varieties

Dwarf tomato plants aren’t named for their fruit size, but for the plant size. They are indeterminate, but with the dwarf gene. This makes for a compact plant which won’t get much taller than about 1.4 m, and which is ideal for smaller backyards or anywhere a little short of space for growing the classic indeterminate heirlooms. This size plant is well-suited for the 20 L Air-Pot®.

The dwarf size doesn’t restrict the size or number of fruit that grow — far from it! Dwarf types have as wide a range of size, colour and taste as the classic heirlooms.

Dwarf tomato plants are somewhat new, originating with the The Dwarf Tomato Project which was established as a co-operative venture in 2006. Seeds developed from this project are subject to the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI) and pledge, which states:
The OSSI pledge — You have the freedom to use these OSSI-Pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others’ use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents or other means, and to include this Pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.
